An Evening of Contemporary Dance

Hemabharathy Palani has evolved a unique movement style by blending the distilled vocabularies of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi (in which she has trained for 13 years and also performed extensively) with the freedom of Contemporary Dance. Over the last eight years at Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, she has trained in Kalarippayattu, Yoga , Contact Improvisation, Ballet and Pilates giving her movement a strong, sensitive and precise quality. 

On June 12th – she will be presenting two of her own works. Her first piece “Chaaya” (Shadow) – which premiered at the Attakkalari India Biennial last year – emerges from the shadows of child sexual abuse. This raw and lyrical piece is tragic yet triumphant.

Her second piece “Uruvam” (Form) has been developed under the auspices of the Robert Bosch Art Grant 2009 provided by Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Ltd (RBEI). Working with Australian music composer Leah Barclay, Japanese media artist Matsuo Kunihiko and Bangalore’s own light designer Nandakishore, Hemabharathy explores gender and celebrates form.

Hemabharathy is a prominent figure among the emerging new choreographers of contemporary India. She has participated in several national and international projects and represented India - in choreography projects, residencies and taken part in all of Attakkalari’s multi-media dance productions performing at most of the major European festivals. She is currently the rehearsal director at Attakkalari.

The performance will take place on Saturday June 12th, 2010 at Alliance Française de Bangalore and will begin at 7:30 PM.
