Hello everyone,

It's been a few days since the newest batches have begun at AFB and although several of you have come back to continue your French learning, there are many among you who are new to AFB! We'd like to get to know you better and make you feel at home!

So please feel free to reply to this post and introduce yourselves and tell us why you're interested in the language, what aspects of the language and culture you're hoping to learn about, is there anything particular about France, French, the French and their culture that fascinates you?

Do tell all!

New to AFB? Empty J'ai un doute

Post  Savitha Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:14 pm

Bonjour Smitha,

Bonjour Smitha,

I wish to take a small initiative to answer this question...

Bonjour Savitha,

I choose English to explain rules in grammar, because I feel you will understand better if I explain in a language that you know well...

The expression "j'habite à Bangalore, il y a neuf ans" will give a meaning "I live in bangalore, 9 years ago..." which is neither correct in English.

If I am not wrong...
Depuis refers to the duration of something that is still going on in the present, or was still going on when something else happened (continuing action).

Il y a means ago, which is already completed in the past (completed action).

The different uses of the phrases can be:
J'ai habité à chennai il y a neuf ans... I lived in Chennai 9 years ago....
J'habite à Bangalore depuis neuf ans... I live in Bangalore since 9 years...

I hope this completely answers your question... Smile You will learn more on this in A2P1..

Merci beaucoup Dinesh pour votre réponse. Maintenant, j'ai compris la difference entre "depuis" et "il y a". Bonne explication.
