@ AFB
11 JUNE 7.30 PM

The music for the trio was written a few years ago. At the time the idea was to create a repertoire, borrowing from different musical styles, but also one that held together. The music has a strong compositional element, in conjunction with the possibility to play freely within. In the years after, Maarten has been working with sound based music, special
techniques on saxophone and contemporary composition. After coming back to an improvised trio, each composition has been reworked by the musicians so that there is a different approach to sound in each of them. This now forms the frame within which the musicians improvise. Between 1994 and 1998 Maarten Visser studied saxophone at the ‘Brabants Conservatorium’ (Netherlands). He is from Holland and a longtime resident of Chennai. Visser unlike some
other Dutch nationals living in the city, has been making headlines for all the right reasons - his wizardry on the saxophone. Though his affair with Carnatic music was short-lived and his one-off jam with Kadri Gopalnath was panned by Chennai’s music critics, Visser stayed on to become a regular on the Indian jazz circuit. Holger Jetter lives and works as musician, composer, arranger and producer in Auroville, South India. He studied western classical music, principal instrument violin, at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich, Germany and at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria with Prof. Jürgen Geise. Suresh Bhaskara studied tabla and Indian classical music in Calcutta with
Pandit Shankar Ghosh as well as various styles of drumming in Paris with Christian Nicolas. Having performed in India Suresh has evolved to create a unique style and new possibilities. He lives and teaches in Auroville since 1999.
